Japan’s NHK records international sports event in 22.2 surround with mc²56.
Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2009/2010 NHK Trophy broadcasted with mc²66.
Nippon Hōsō Kyōkai (NHK), employing a Lawo mc²56 console, successfully recorded the competition held during the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating 2009/2010 NHK Trophy with a 22.2 Multichannel Audio System and Super Hi-Vision. This famous international sports event was held in Nagano City, Japan, from 6th to 8th November 2009.
For the recording, Japanese distributor Otaritec supplied the equipment which, in turn, provided superb results.
The 22.2 format is the surround sound component of Super Hi-Vision, a new television standard with sixteen times the pixel resolution of HDTV, which has been developed by NHK’s Science & Technical Research Laboratories. It utilises twenty-four loudspeakers (including two sub-woofers) arranged in three layers – an upper layer of nine channels, a middle layer of ten channels, and lower layer of three channels. The 22.2 multichannel sound system was developed to reproduce an immersive and natural three-dimensional soundfield, with superior presence and realism. Because of the complex arrangement of speakers compared to a 5.1 surround setup, conventional surround sound equipment is not effective for productions using the 22.2 multichannel sound system.
The figure skating competition broadcast was accomplished with the use of an additional console – the Lawo mc²66 that NHK had installed in March 2009. With this exciting programme, NHK brought the world’s top-ranked skaters’ impressive performance to their TV audience live every day, in high-quality 5.1 surround sound.
NHK, Japan's national public broadcaster, are also using Lawo equipment for their dedicated audio OB van A-1. Since the start of 2009, NHK have been handling OB productions for their live broadcasts with mc²90 and mc²66 consoles from Lawo.
