China's first mc²56 consoles grace Chongqing Grand Theatre.

Home to the first pair of mc²56 consoles in the nation.

China’s fastest-growing city is now home to the first Lawo mc²56 digital audio consoles in the nation.  The specification of a pair of mc²56 desks for the much-anticipated Grand Theatre in Chongqing, in Sichuan Province, is a direct consequence of Lawo's impressive record at the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008.

The new 96,000 sq. metre Grand Theatre in Chongqing is one of the first large-scale theatrical venues in the world to embrace the mc²56 design.  Two consoles have been ordered, in 48-fader and 32-fader configurations, which will be used for front-of-house control in the two auditoria in the Theatre.

Even in a country that is engaged in one of the largest cultural investment programs in history, Chongqing's Grand Theatre is impressive.  It will be one of the largest in south-west China, costing in the region of 1.5 billion yuan.  In its primary auditorium, there is capacity for 1,800 people in the Grand Theatre and 900 people in the smaller hall.

The two theatre auditoria will be networked. With 192 channels of DSP and ten frames of the DALLIS I/O system between them, the Lawo consoles each offer a routing capacity of 3072 x 3072.  To exploit the networking potential of the router built into the HD core of each mc²56, main contractor Leifull Light & Sound Technology Co. Ltd. has installed tie lines between the control rooms, maximising connectivity and flexible operation across the two stages and ten Lawo stageboxes.

The ability to share all input signals between the consoles, as well as their exceptional ease-of-use and reliably high-quality audio performance, were some of the operational reasons for choosing Lawo for the Chongqing Theatre.  Francis He, Lawo’s principal representative in China, is in no doubt that this prestigious contract is a direct result of Lawo’s extensive involvement in the Beijing Games.

“Seeing Lawo consoles being used successfully by so many Chinese and international broadcasters at the Olympic Games has created strong confidence in the brand and the technology. However, a most important influence is the success of installations of Lawo mc² series consoles in Dong Guan Yu Lan Grand Theatre and Wuhan Qin Tai Culture and Art Centre, also handled by Leifull Light & Sound Technology Co. Ltd.  Chongqing Grand Theatre is the third large theatre in China to implement a digital networked solution, and all three have done so using Lawo consoles.”
